How to become a real estate agent in Kansas

Step 1

Before you can dive into your new career, you must meet the state’s baseline criteria and begin completing official licensing requirements as outlined by the Kansas Real Estate Commission (KREC). 

You need to meet the following criteria: 

• Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old. 
• Education: You must have a high school diploma or a GED. 

Next, you’ll create an account through the KREC Citizen Access portal and submit your pre-license application. After paying the required fees, you’ll receive your pre-license number (PL number), which you’ll use to register for your courses and continue the licensing process. 


Step 2

Once you’ve received your pre-license number, you can begin your required coursework through a state-approved education provider. 

Your classes will cover everything from property laws to fair housing regulations, so you’re fully prepared to serve your future clients.

  • Total hours: 60

Step 3

As part of your pre-license application, you’ll be required to complete a fingerprint-based background check. You can submit fingerprints through an authorized provider or by mailing fingerprint cards to the Commission. The background check fee is $70. 

After completing the required education, you’ll be authorized to take the Kansas real estate exam administered by Pearson VUE. 

To prepare for exam day, make sure you feel confident in both national real estate concepts and Kansas-specific laws. Once you pass the exam, your scores will be sent directly to the Commission. 


Step 4

Before your license can be issued, you must affiliate with a licensed Kansas real estate brokerage. 

Choosing the right brokerage is a huge decision. You should interview a few different brokerages and ask them about the following: 

  • Mentorship programs: Do they offer ongoing education or hands-on support for new agents? 
  • Commission splits: Make sure you understand how commissions are divided. 
  • Company culture: Visit the office to ensure the professional environment aligns with your values.    

Step 5 

Once you’ve completed all requirements, you’ll be invited to submit your license application through the KREC portal. 

Here is your checklist for the final application process: 

  • Provide your course completion certificates. 
  • Include your broker affiliation. 
  • Pay the $125 license fee. (You will have already paid a $15 pre-license application fee earlier in the process.)
