Ready to get licensed? Arizona salesperson applicants must complete the required education, fingerprint clearance, examinations, application, and broker activation steps. The process below follows current Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE) salesperson requirements and Pearson testing guidance.

Confirm you meet Arizona salesperson eligibility requirements

You must be at least 18 years old when applying. ADRE also reviews honesty, truthfulness, good character, and competency, and applicants must provide proof of authorized legal presence in the United States. If you have disciplinary or criminal history to disclose, review ADRE’s disclosure requirements before you apply.

Complete 90 hours of approved pre-licensing education and pass the school final

Complete at least 90 hours of ADRE-approved salesperson pre-licensing education and pass the school’s final examination. Arizona allows approved distance-learning courses, but state law requires the final examination for the live classroom or distance-learning salesperson course to be proctored in person. Your 90-hour course certificate must be no more than 10 years old when you apply for your license.

Get your fingerprint clearance card and complete the 6-hour Contract Writing course

Obtain a valid Level 1 Non-IVP Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The current DPS application fee is $67, with additional fingerprint vendor and online payment fees possible. Before licensure, also complete the required 6-hour Arizona Contract Writing course. ADRE requires that certificate to be completed within two years of your license application.

Schedule and pass the Arizona salesperson examinations

Original salesperson applicants take both the General and Arizona State-Specific examinations through Pearson VUE. The General exam has 80 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions and allows 150 minutes. The State exam has 60 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions and allows 90 minutes. You need 75% correct to pass. Pearson lists fees of $70 for the General exam and $60 for the State exam, with a $75 combo discount when the two are scheduled back to back. Arizona real estate exams are offered at Pearson test centers, not through online OnVUE testing.

Apply to ADRE within one year of passing

Submit your salesperson application and supporting documents through the ADRE online licensing system within one year of passing the examinations. For an original license, ADRE currently requires both Pearson score reports, the 90-hour pre-licensing certificate, 6-hour Contract Writing certificate, Fingerprint Clearance Card, proof of legal presence, and required disclosure documents. The current original salesperson license cost is $60 ($50 license fee plus $10 Real Estate Recovery Fund).

Activate your license with an Arizona employing broker

You do not need to choose an employing broker before taking the salesperson examinations. After ADRE approves a complete application and places the license in eligible status, you can initiate activation through your online account. Your license becomes active after the employing broker accepts the request.

Arizona Real Estate License FAQs

How much does it cost to get an Arizona real estate license?

Current required government and testing fees start at $202 before pre-licensing education and fingerprint vendor/payment fees if you use Pearson’s $75 back-to-back exam combo. That total includes the $75 combined General and State exam fee, the $60 original salesperson license fee, and the $67 DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card application fee. If you schedule the exams separately, Pearson currently lists $70 for the General exam and $60 for the State exam. Fees can change, so confirm the latest amounts with ADRE, Pearson, and DPS. For a broader cost breakdown, see our real estate license cost guide.

How long does it take to get an Arizona real estate license?

Your timing depends on how quickly you complete the 90-hour pre-licensing course and 6-hour Contract Writing course, pass the school final and Pearson exams, receive your Fingerprint Clearance Card, submit a complete application, and complete broker activation. ADRE requires you to apply within one year after passing the licensing examinations.

Can I take Arizona real estate pre-licensing classes online?

Yes. Arizona law allows approved salesperson pre-licensing education through a live classroom or distance-learning course. ASREB offers online and livestream options in addition to in-person classes. Keep in mind that Arizona law requires the pre-licensing course final examination to be proctored in person even when the course is completed through distance learning.

What is on the Arizona real estate salesperson exam?

Original salesperson applicants take two Pearson examinations. The General exam includes 80 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions and allows 150 minutes. The Arizona State-Specific exam includes 60 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions and allows 90 minutes. A score of 75% correct is required to pass. Review current scheduling information with Pearson VUE before test day.

Do I need an employing broker before I take the Arizona exam?

No. You can complete the education and examination process before choosing an employing broker. After ADRE approves your application in eligible status, you can request license activation through your online account, and the employing broker must accept the request before the license becomes active.

Does Arizona offer real estate license reciprocity?

Arizona uses an out-of-state license recognition process rather than simple blanket reciprocity. Eligibility depends on your current out-of-state license history and other requirements. Qualified salesperson applicants generally take the Arizona State-Specific exam and must meet Arizona requirements for contract writing, fingerprint clearance, legal presence, and application documentation. Review the current ADRE out-of-state license recognition requirements before applying.

Do I need a college degree to get an Arizona real estate license?

No college degree is listed as a standard Arizona salesperson licensing requirement. You still need to meet the state’s age and character requirements, complete the approved education and school final, obtain the required Fingerprint Clearance Card, pass the licensing examinations, and complete the ADRE application and activation process.
