How to become a real estate agent in Iowa

Getting your real estate license in Iowa is more straightforward than you might think.

Ready to start your journey to a successful real estate career? Here are the five key steps and license requirements to become a real estate salesperson in Iowa.

Step 1

Before you can dive into your new career, you must meet the state’s licensing requirements established by the Iowa Real Estate Commission (IREC) and complete the required education.

  • Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old at the time the application is submitted.
  • Education requirement: You must complete a pre-licensing course of real estate principles and practices from an approved provider before taking the exam. Additionally, you must complete three 12-hour courses (live instruction only) in Buying Practices, Listing Practices, and Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices before applying for a license. All courses must have been taken less than one year before the time the commission receives your completed application.
  • Total hours: 60

Colibri Real Estate empowers aspiring agents to start their careers by offering comprehensive and flexible online pre-licensing courses. Join over 1.5 million students who have trusted us to help them find success.

Step 2

After completing your pre-license education, you’ll register for and pass the Iowa salesperson licensing examination, which is administered by PSI.

You must schedule an appointment to take the exam at a PSI testing site (located in West Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Council Bluffs). The examination fee is $95. Your passing score is valid until the last working day of the sixth month following your exam pass date.

To prepare for exam day, make sure you feel confident in both national real estate concepts and Iowa-specific laws.

Step 3

All applicants must undergo a national criminal history check through the FBI. To begin this process, you will create a login for “My Iowa PLB” and submit an electronic request for a fingerprint packet. This requires a $51 fee. The background check typically takes five to six weeks to complete and is valid for 210 calendar days.

Do not submit fingerprints directly to the FBI; they must be processed through the Iowa Real Estate Commission.

Step 4

To begin your career as a real estate agent, you must be sponsored by a licensed Iowa broker. This is a significant decision that will shape your professional journey. Take the time to interview several brokerages to find the right fit. When you meet with them, inquire about:

  • Mentorship programs: Do they provide new agents with ongoing education and hands-on support to help you succeed?
  • Commission splits: Ensure you have a clear understanding of how commissions are divided.
  • Company culture: A visit to the office can help you determine if the professional environment aligns with your personal values and career goals.

Step 5

In Iowa, all active real estate licensees are required to maintain uninterrupted Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance coverage. You will need to provide proof of this insurance when submitting your initial license application. While you are free to select your own insurance provider, a group coverage policy is available through Rice Insurance Services Center (RISC).

Once you have passed the exam, secured a sponsoring broker, and obtained E&O insurance, you can submit your formal application electronically through your “My Iowa PLB” account.

After obtaining your Iowa real estate license, you must complete post-licensing education to remain active. New licensees are required to complete 36 hours of commission-approved courses, including specific topics such as Buying Practices, Listing Practices, and Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices, within the first year of licensure. uing education.
