How to become a real estate agent in Maine

Getting your real estate license in Maine is a straightforward process, and it can open the door to a flexible, rewarding career.

Ready to start your journey to a successful real estate career? Here are the key steps and license requirements to become a Sales Agent in Maine.

Step 1

Before you embark on your new career path, you must meet the basic requirements set by the Maine Real Estate Commission. You need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of your application
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Demonstrate honesty, trustworthiness, and good professional standing

Note that you do not need to be a Maine resident to get licensed; out-of-state applicants are welcome.

Step 2

Complete your pre-licensing real estate education from a state-approved provider. Your courses will cover topics such as agency relationships and Maine real estate laws to prepare you to serve your clients confidently.

  • Total hours: 55

Colibri Real Estate empowers agents to start their careers by offering flexible and comprehensive pre-licensing courses backed by a Pass or Don’t Pay Guarantee. Join over 1.5 million other students who’ve found success with us.

Step 3

After completing your coursework, the next step toward your new career is to register for and pass the Maine real estate exam, which is administered by Pearson VUE for a fee of $100.

You’ll need to prepare for both the national real estate concepts section, which consists of 80 questions, and the Maine-specific laws section, which has 40 questions.

You must pass the exam within one year of completing your course to remain eligible for licensure.

Step 4

The next step is to complete a criminal records check and submit your license application to the Maine Real Estate Commission.

Your application should include your pre-licensing course completion certificate, your passing exam results from Pearson VUE (dated within the last 12 months), the completed criminal records check, and proof of your high school diploma or equivalent.

You will also need to include payment for the $100 application/license fee and the $21 background check fee. Remember, you must apply for your Sales Agent license within one year of passing the exam to ensure you can move forward and achieve your career ambitions.

Step 5

Your initial Sales Agent license in Maine is valid for two years and is not renewable. To continue your career and unlock new opportunities, you must upgrade to an Associate Broker license before your initial two years are up. This involves completing two years of active experience as a Sales Agent and successfully finishing a 60-hour Associate Broker Course.
