How to become a real estate agent in Indiana

The real estate licensing process in Indiana is more straightforward than you would think.

Getting your real estate license in Indiana is simpler than it might seem. Here’s a clear breakdown of the five steps to become a licensed real estate agent (called a “broker” in Indiana).

Step 1

Before you begin, make sure you meet the basic eligibility and licensing requirements set by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.

To apply for an Indiana real estate broker license, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be prepared to answer background and licensing history questions

Indiana has guidelines around criminal history. In general, you cannot have convictions that would raise concerns about your ability to practice safely and professionally. If you answer “yes” to any criminal history or disciplinary questions, you’ll need to provide detailed documentation. These situations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the state.

Step 2

Indiana requires you to complete pre-licensing education before applying for your license.

  • Total hours: 90

Your coursework will cover essential topics like real estate principles, contracts, licensing laws, and property practices so you’re prepared for both the licensing exam and real-world transactions.

You can complete your coursework online, so it fits easily into your schedule. With Colibri Real Estate, you’ll get self-paced, state-approved courses created by experienced real estate professionals, along with the support you need to stay on track.

Step 3

After completing your education, you’ll need to pass the Indiana licensing exam administered by Pearson VUE. The licensing exam includes both national and Indiana-specific content.

To get ready for the exam, stick to a consistent study routine, take practice tests, and spend extra time on key concepts. Having a simple plan in place can make studying feel more manageable and help you walk into the exam with confidence.

Step 4

Before your license can be activated, you’ll need to choose a sponsoring brokerage. Your sponsoring brokerage will provide guidance, tools, and oversight as you begin your real estate career.

When evaluating brokerages, consider whether they offer training, what their commission structure looks like, and if their culture aligns with your goals.

You’ll also need to include your brokerage’s information in your application, and they must approve your affiliation before your license is issued.

Step 5

To complete the license application process, you’ll submit your application along with required documentation and fees.

Be prepared with the following:

  • Licensing exam score report from Pearson VUE
  • Proof of pre-licensing course completion
  • Sponsoring broker or company information
  • Application fee
  • Government-issued ID
  • Positive response documentation for any background disclosures (if applicable)

If you’re applying online, most documents must be uploaded digitally. Your sponsoring broker must also approve your application before your license can be issued.

Before submitting, review everything carefully to avoid delays. Missing or incomplete documentation is one of the most common reasons applications are held up.

Once your license is issued, Indiana requires new brokers to complete 30 hours of post-licensing education within the first two years. This additional training helps you build practical skills and prepare for working with clients independently.
