Pre-licensing education costs vary by course package. For the standard first-time salesperson path, the New York Department of State currently charges $15 for the written exam and $65 for the initial license application, or $80 in mandatory state exam and application fees before education. A separate fingerprint or background-check fee is not listed as a standard requirement. For a more complete budget, see our New York real estate license cost guide. Fees can change, so confirm current amounts on the New York Department of State salesperson page.

No. The New York Department of State does not currently have real estate license reciprocity agreements with any other state. If a waiver is granted, you still need to pass the New York State salesperson exam and complete the applicable license application process.
For the standard first-time salesperson path, you must complete the required 77 hours of approved qualifying education. Applicants who completed qualifying education outside New York may request an education waiver from the Department of State and follow the waiver process if approved.
Timing depends on how quickly you complete the 77 hours of qualifying education, schedule and pass the state exam, secure a sponsoring broker, submit a complete application, and complete the Department of State review process. A passing salesperson exam result is valid for two years. See the step-by-step New York licensing process for more detail.

Your principal broker must authorize your online application before the Department of State completes its review. For more information, take a look at New York real estate license requirements.
