How to get a Real Estate License in Iowa
To earn an Iowa real estate salesperson license, complete 96 hours of approved education, pass both exam portions, and meet the Iowa Real Estate Commission’s application requirements. You can take the 60-hour fundamentals course online, while the three additional 12-hour courses require live instruction. Follow these steps to get started:
1
Confirm Iowa salesperson license eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old when you apply. Iowa has no residency requirement. Applicants undergo a national criminal history check, and identity and lawful-presence verification may apply during licensing.
2
Complete 96 hours of approved pre-licensing education
Complete a 60-hour principles and practices course, plus three 12-hour live courses: Buying Practices, Listing Practices, and Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices. Complete the 60-hour course before taking the licensing exam and all 96 hours within the year before your completed application. Colibri’s online 60-hour course does not replace the required live classes.
3
Start your fingerprinting & background check
Create an account in the My Iowa PLB licensing portal and request a fingerprint packet. Return the completed fingerprint card and waiver as instructed. Review can take several weeks, and results are valid for 210 calendar days. Budget approximately $51, subject to current state fees.
4
Pass the Iowa salesperson licensing exam
After completing the 60-hour course, register with PSI and pass both the national and Iowa state portions. The state lists a $95 exam fee, with 80 national questions and 40 state questions, passing scores of 56 and 28, respectively, and 180 minutes of combined testing time. Use Iowa real estate exam prep to prepare. Passing results remain valid until the last working day of the sixth month after the pass date.
5
Choose a sponsoring broker and obtain insurance
Affiliate with an Iowa-licensed sponsoring broker and obtain the required errors and omissions (E&O) insurance before your license can be issued for active practice. Salespersons cannot independently conduct brokerage activity.
6
Submit your Iowa salesperson license application
Follow the commission’s official application instructions to apply electronically through My Iowa PLB. Submit proof of your completed coursework, valid exam passes, background review, insurance, and broker affiliation. The reported salesperson application fee is $125.

Iowa requires 96 hours of salesperson pre-license education: a 60-hour principles course and three separate 12-hour live courses. How long completion takes depends on your study pace and the availability of approved live sessions. The background check and licensing application can add time.
You can complete the 60-hour Iowa principles and practices course online through an approved provider. However, Iowa also requires 36 hours of live instruction across Buying Practices, Listing Practices, and Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices. These additional courses are not self-paced. Confirm available live options with an approved provider.

No. You must complete an approved 60-hour principles and practices course before taking the Iowa salesperson licensing exam.
It depends on how quickly you complete the required 96 hours, pass the exam, finish the background check and submit a complete application. Iowa does not guarantee a single processing timeline.
Applicants must be at least 18 when applying; complete a 60-hour pre-license course plus three 12-hour live courses; pass both salesperson licensing exam portions; complete fingerprinting and the background check; obtain E&O insurance and a sponsoring broker; and apply through My Iowa PLB.
