How to get a Real Estate License in Indiana
In Indiana, new real estate agents are licensed as brokers. You will need to meet the state’s eligibility rules, complete 90 hours of approved education, pass the broker exam, and apply through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). Here is the process from enrollment to license activation.
1
Confirm Indiana Broker License Eligibility
To apply for an Indiana real estate broker license, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. You must also disclose relevant criminal or professional disciplinary history on your application. Review the Indiana real estate license requirements before enrolling.
2
Complete Your 90-Hour Pre-Licensing Course
Finish 90 hours of Indiana-approved broker pre-licensing education. Colibri’s course is organized into three 30-hour sections covering the real estate principles and Indiana topics required for licensure. Keep your course completion certificate for your license application.
3
Pass Your Pre-Licensing Course Exams
Colibri’s Indiana course requires an exam at the end of each 30-hour section. Each section exam has 100 questions, and a 75% passing score is required. These school exams are separate from the state licensing exam. Your school will provide proof of completion once you meet its requirements.
4
Pass the Indiana Pearson VUE Broker Exam
Register with Pearson VUE after completing your education. The $55 broker exam has 145 questions, including national and Indiana-specific portions, with four hours of testing time. You need a scaled score of 75 to pass each portion, and both must be passed within one year of completing your pre-licensing course. See the Indiana real estate exam guide for preparation tips.
5
Choose a Sponsoring Brokerage
If you want your Indiana license issued in Active or Referral status, provide the license details of your broker company or sole proprietor managing broker. The proposed brokerage must approve your association before the license can be issued in that status. Ask prospective brokerages about training, support, supervision, and commission arrangements.
6
Apply for Your Indiana Broker License
Submit your application through Indiana MyLicense One and pay the $60 application fee, plus any online processing fees. Upload your pre-licensing course completion certificate and Pearson VUE passing score report. Disclose any disciplinary history accurately and provide an explanation and supporting records if requested. For full details, see the Indiana Real Estate Commission’s licensing instructions.

FAQs
If a student does not pass the Indiana real estate license exam within 30 days of completing the exam prep course, we’ll reimburse the original cost of either your pre-licensing package or the exclusive exam prep you purchased.* For reimbursement, email us at [email protected] with a copy of your exam results, including the date of the exams, within 30 days of the failed exam attempt.
*Specific state laws or regulations prohibit some students from qualifying. For example, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and New Jersey do not permit guarantees to passing the real estate licensing exam.
Plan for 90-hour course tuition, a $55 Pearson VUE broker exam fee, and the $60 IPLA broker license application fee, for $115 in standard exam and application charges before tuition, processing fees, or any additional documentation costs. Course tuition varies by package and promotion. Indiana’s current broker application checklist does not list a universal fingerprinting fee. Review the Indiana real estate licensing cost guide for a broader budget breakdown.
Indiana requires 90 instructional hours of broker pre-licensing education. Colibri’s online course can be completed at your own pace and must be finished within six months of enrollment. Your timeline will depend on the time you set aside each week.
Yes, you can! Colibri offers students or licensees to attend classes and complete their pre-licensing course fully online with flexible self-paced packages.
Indiana does not have formal real estate license reciprocity agreements. However, brokers actively licensed in another state can apply to the Indiana Real Estate Commission for licensure by endorsement. If the Commission approves the equivalency review, applicants must pass the Indiana state portion of the Pearson VUE exam before receiving a license. See Indiana broker licensing instructions.
For a first-time Indiana broker license, you must complete the 90-hour approved pre-licensing course before taking the Pearson VUE licensing exam. The Commission may exempt approved out-of-state endorsement applicants from that education requirement, but they must still pass the Indiana state exam.
It varies per person on how long it takes to get an Indiana real estate license depending on the pace in which you complete the 90 hours of pre-licensing coursework and pass your licensing examination, the time it takes you to complete the application process and obtain broker sponsorship, and application processing times. Some candidates complete the requirements within a few months.
First-time applicants for a real estate license in Indiana must complete 90 hours of mandatory coursework to qualify for the state licensing exam.
To qualify for an Indiana real estate broker license, you must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete 90 hours of approved pre-licensing education, pass both sections of the Pearson VUE broker exam, and submit your application and required documents to IPLA. To begin practicing under an active broker affiliation, your sponsoring brokerage must approve the request. Review the Indiana real estate license requirements.
After getting licensed, Indiana requires new brokers to complete 30 hours of approved post-licensing education within two years of the original license date. This is separate from the 90-hour pre-licensing course. See Indiana post-licensing courses for the next step.
Applicants must answer the IPLA application’s criminal history and disciplinary questions. If you disclose a relevant issue, include an explanation and supporting court or disciplinary records as instructed. Routine fingerprinting is not listed as a universal requirement in the current IPLA broker application checklist. Follow any additional documentation requests from the Commission.
