How to renew your real estate license in Virginia

Virginia real estate licenses must be renewed every two years through the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). To renew an active license, real estate salespersons and brokers must complete required education, submit a renewal application, and pay the required renewal fee before the expiration date.

Virginia real estate licenses are valid for two years from the date of issuance. Renew your license before the expiration date to avoid interruptions to your ability to practice real estate in Virginia.

Step 1

Before renewing your license, complete all required education for your license type.

Virginia salespersons who have already renewed at least once must complete continuing education every two years. For licenses expiring on or after June 30, 2026, Virginia continuing education requirements include the following hours and mandatory topics:

  • 3 hours: Ethics and Standards of Conduct
  • 2 hours: Fair Housing
  • 1 hour: Legal Updates and Emerging Trends
  • 1 hour: Real Estate Agency
  • 1 hour: Real Estate Contracts
  • 8 hours: Elective courses

Virginia brokers must complete continuing education every two years. Current requirements include:

  • 6 hours: Broker Management
  • 2 hours: Broker Supervision
  • 3 hours: Ethics and Standards of Conduct
  • 2 hours: Fair Housing
  • 1 hour: Legal Updates and Emerging Trends
  • 1 hour: Real Estate Agency
  • 1 hour: Real Estate Contracts
  • 8 hours: Elective courses

Post-license education requirements for new salespersons

New Virginia salesperson licensees must complete a Board-approved 30-hour post-license education (PLE) curriculum within one year from the last day of the month in which the license was issued.

Post-license education is separate from continuing education and does not count toward continuing education requirements.

New salespersons are not required to complete the standard continuing education requirement during their first two-year license term.

Failure to complete post-license education within one year results in automatic placement of the license on inactive status.

Continuing education credits do not carry over into future renewal periods.

Be sure to save your course completion certificates and maintain copies for your records.

Pro Tip: Complete your continuing education at least 30–60 days before your license expiration date to avoid reporting delays or renewal issues.

Step 2

Log into the Virginia DPOR Online Services Portal using your account credentials.

From your account dashboard, locate your license and begin the renewal process.

Before submitting your renewal application:

  • Verify your contact information
  • Confirm your education requirements have been completed
  • Review your license status carefully

Virginia also allows renewal by paper application, but online renewal is generally the fastest option.

Failure to receive a renewal notice does not relieve licensees of the obligation to renew on time.

Step 3

Before submitting your renewal:

  • Confirm all required education has been completed
  • Review your application for accuracy
  • Verify your license information is correct

Current renewal fees include:

  • Salesperson renewal fee: $100
  • Broker renewal fee: $125

After submitting payment:

  • Save your confirmation receipt
  • Monitor your license status through the DPOR license lookup system
  • Verify your license remains active after processing

Virginia determines renewal timeliness based on the date the renewal is received by the agency, not the postmark date.

Here are a few additional renewal details to keep in mind before submitting your application.

  • License validity period: 2 years from date of issuance
  • Experienced salesperson continuing education requirement: 16
