How to renew your real estate license in Minnesota
Minnesota real estate licenses operate on a two-year license period through the Minnesota Department of Commerce. To maintain an active real estate salesperson license, licensees must complete annual continuing education requirements, remain associated with an actively licensed broker or company, and complete renewal requirements before the applicable deadlines.
Minnesota real estate license renewal steps
Minnesota real estate licensees must complete continuing education every year before June 30 as part of an ongoing two-year licensing cycle. In general:
- Licensees complete 30 total hours of continuing education during each two-year license period
- At least 15 hours must be completed each year before June 30
Step 1
Complete your continuing education requirements
Before renewing your license, complete all required continuing education.
Minnesota salesperson continuing education requirements: 15 hours
Currently, Minnesota real estate salespersons must complete:
- A specific general module continuing education course each year
- At least one hour of Agency Law training during the two-year license period
- At least one hour of Fair Housing training during the two-year license period
Minnesota broker continuing education requirements: 15 hours
Currently, Minnesota real estate brokers must complete:
- A specific general module continuing education course each year
- A broker module course if required during that year
- At least one hour of Agency Law training during the two-year license period
- At least one hour of Fair Housing training during the two-year license period
Commercial-only continuing education exemption
Commercial-only brokers and salespersons who properly file their commercial-only designation with the Minnesota Department of Commerce are exempt from the following:
- Agency Law coursework
- Fair Housing coursework
- Specific module training courses
However, commercial-only licensees must still complete all other continuing education requirements.
Newly licensed Minnesota agents
Newly licensed Minnesota real estate salespersons and brokers generally do not need to complete continuing education before the first June 30 that occurs after initial licensure.
Important continuing education reminders:
- Continuing education must be completed before June 30 each year
- Continuing education does not carry over into future license periods
- You may not repeat the same course for credit during the same licensing period
- Continuing education providers must be approved by the Minnesota Department of Commerce
Pro Tip: Do not wait until late June to complete continuing education. Course providers need time to upload student rosters, and delays can cause license renewals to pend or lapse after June 30.
Step 2
Verify your education and license status
Minnesota licensees should verify that all continuing education requirements have been properly completed and reported before renewal.
Licensees should also maintain copies of continuing education completion certificates for their records.
Step 3
Renew your license through your broker or company
Minnesota real estate salespersons do not personally submit their renewal application.
The actively licensed broker with whom the salesperson is associated must submit the renewal through the PULSE licensing system.
Once approved:
- The broker may print the renewed license
- The licensee’s active status remains current
- The renewed license information becomes available through the licensing system
Minnesota brokers must also remain associated with an actively licensed real estate company to maintain active status.
