To become a real estate agent in California, you must first get your California real estate license. The process of getting your real estate license generally takes a few months and includes the following steps:

Meet California’s License Requirements

California real estate salesperson applicants must be at least 18 years old and meet the California Department of Real Estate’s honesty and truthfulness requirements.

If you live outside California, review the DRE’s out-of-state applicant requirements before applying.

Complete California Pre-Licensing Education

Complete 135 hours of DRE-approved pre-licensing education: 45 hours of Real Estate Principles, 45 hours of Real Estate Practice, and one 45-hour elective.

Real Estate Practice includes required fair housing and implicit bias content. Each course has its own final exam and an 18-day minimum before that exam can be taken.

Submit Your California Salesperson Exam Application

Once your education is complete, apply for the California salesperson examination through the DRE eLicensing system or by mail.

You’ll need to provide proof of your completed education and pay the required exam fee.

Complete Fingerprinting & Background Check

Submit fingerprints for the required criminal background check as part of the licensing process.

Pass the California Real Estate Exam

The California salesperson licensing exam includes 150 multiple-choice questions.

You need a score of 70% or higher to pass.

Finish Your License Application & Work With a Broker

After passing the exam, complete the remaining DRE license application requirements.

You can be issued a salesperson license without immediately working for a broker, but you’ll need to work under a Responsible California Broker before performing activities that require a real estate license.
