Here's what you need to get your Maine Real Estate license

The information below is a summary of the minimum requirements set forth by the Maine Real Estate Commission. For a more detailed requirements breakdown, please see the board's site.

Steps to licensure:

  • Completed License Application
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be at least 18 at time of application for the license.
  • Complete the Sales Agent course with a minimum final grade of 75%
  • Pass the sales agent licensing examination, administered by Pearson VUE, with a minimum final grade of 75% within one year of passing the Sales Agent course. 
  • Important Note: Application for the sales agent license must be made within one (1) year of passing the licensing examination.

Maine real estate professionals are required to obtain 21 hours of continuing education every 24 months. Three (3) hours of the 21 hours must be in a core course.

Core Course Requirement
Per the Maine Real Estate Commission:

Effective April 1, 2025 the Real Estate Commission core course is “Reasonable Care and Diligence Core Course”.

The course noted above is required if:

  • your license expiration date is on or after April 1, 2025 (even if you renew before April 1, 2025).
  • your license has expired and you renew on or after April 1, 2025.
  • you activate a license on or after April 1, 2025.

Licensees with a license expiration date prior to April 1, 2025, who renew prior to April 1, 2025, may fulfill their Core course requirement with either the “Buyer Relationships Core Course” or the new core course as noted above.
