Here's what you need to renew your South Dakota Real Estate license

The information below is a summary of the minimum requirements set forth by the South Dakota Real Estate Commission. For a more detailed requirements breakdown, please see the board's site.

Persons receiving initial licensure as a broker associate shall complete 60 hours of postlicensing education.

Thirty (30) hours must be completed during the initial licensing period (Postlicensing Period 1), and 30 hours must be completed during the second license cycle (Postlicensing Period 2).

All of the postlicensing hours must be in Required subject areas.  A licensee can repeat a course, just as long as it is in a different license cycle.  So, if a course is taken for PL1, it can be taken again when the licensee is in PL2.

20:69:11:01.05. Required continuing education subject areas. Required continuing education subject areas may only be in the following subject areas:
-Real Estate Contracts
-Real Estate License Law
-Fair Housing
-Ethics
-Environmental Issues
-Antitrust
-The Americans with Disabilities Act
-Brokerage Services

*Any hours a licensee has completed in the subject areas of negotiation, business planning, technology, or marketing before July 1, 2015, count towards the licensee’s postlicensing education requirement.

Property Managers renewing an active license must complete at least 24 hours of continuing education during the preceding two license years. 

At least 12 of the 24 hours must include study in any combination of the following required subject areas:  Real Estate Contracts, Real Estate License Law, Fair Housing, Ethics, Environmental Issues, Antitrust, The American with Disabilities Act (ADA), or Brokerage Services.


Note: Any property managers licensed on or after Jan. 1, 2019, are required to complete 30 postlicense education hours.  All 30 hours must be in required courses.

Online Limitations

No more than 8 hours of CE may be taken in one day.  There are no limits on the number of CE hours allowed to be taken online.
