What does the extended California renewal deadline mean for me?

As of June 30th, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom has issued Executive Orders N-52-20, N-69-20, and N-71-20 impacting California applicants and licensees in response to COVID-19. These questions and answers were provided by the California Department of Real Estate to help you understand how you may be affected by these new orders.

My license expired during the period identified in Governor Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order N-52-20 issued April 16, 2020. What does this mean for me?

  • If your license expired during the 60-day period between April 16, 2020, and June 14, 2020, you have been granted an extension until December 31, 2020, to submit your renewal application, fee, and continuing education requirements.

My license expires during the period identified in Governor Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order N-69-20 issued June 15, 2020. What does this mean for me?

  • If your license is set to expire during the 60 day period between June 15, 2020, and August 14, 2020, you have been granted an extension until December 31, 2020, to submit your renewal application, fee, and continuing education requirements.

My license expires between August 15, 2020, and December 30, 2020. What does this mean for me?

  • If your license is set to expire between August 15, 2020, and December 30, 2020, you have been granted an extension until December 31, 2020, to submit your renewal application, fee, and continuing education requirements.

How do I request an extension?

  • The California DRE is in the process of identifying all licensees whose license expiration dates fall within the timeframes identified in the Executive Orders, therefore it will not be necessary to request an extension.

How long will this extension last?

  • Executive Order N-71-20 extends certain deadlines that expire during the timeframes identified in Executive Orders N-52-20 and N-69-20 until December 31, 2020.

Will licensees who fall under these extensions be required to complete continuing education requirements?

  • Yes, unless the licensee is exempt from completing CE due to the 70/30 exemption.

Will this extension change my expiration date going forward?

  • No. This will not change your expiration date going forward since the December 31, 2020 extension extends the application period and not the term of the license.

I am ready to submit my renewal application and do not need an extension. Do I have to wait to submit my renewal application?

  • No. If you do not need the extension, you may still use eLicensing to renew your license as usual or submit the renewal application by mail.

My license is already expired. Can I use this extension to renew?

  • All licensees are allowed two years beyond their expiration date to renew their license on a late basis. Per Executive Order N-71-20, if your two-year late renewal period expires between April 16, 2020, and December 30, 2020, you are eligible to renew on a late basis through December 31, 2020.

My examination application is set to expire in the next few weeks. Does the Executive Order apply to me?

  • Examination applications are valid for a two-year period from the date of receipt. Per Executive Order N-71-20, if your examination application expires between April 16, 2020, and December 30, 2020, your application is valid through December 31, 2020.

I passed the salesperson (or broker) examination and the one-year deadline to apply for the license expires within the next 60 days. Does the Executive Order extend my date?

  • Per Executive Order N-71-20, if your deadline to apply for a real estate license after passing the examination is between April 16, 2020, and December 30, 2020, your period to apply for the license is extended until December 31, 2020.
